The major archaeological site in the area is the Neolithic village of Mesaia. This village lies in the agricultural area of the Greek village Mesaia, near Neo Petritsi and the Bulgarian village of Topolnitsa.
The village was found in 1979 after excavations led by the Archeological Museum of Petrich.
There were three chronological phases of settling the village during the Newest Neolithic Era (5200 B.C.-4200 B.C.). Important discoveries are the remains of bronze mines, as well as the most ancient sample of molten bronze item.
